A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

How to write a CV for jobs in Kenya

A useful CV helps an employer find the evidence they need quickly. Read the vacancy first, note the essential skills and qualifications, and choose examples from your own work or training. A CV for an accounts role should foreground different evidence from one for a sales, teaching or ICT role.

A clear CV format

  1. Name and contact details: use your name, professional email, reachable phone number and town or county. Add a relevant portfolio or professional profile if it supports the role.
  2. Professional profile: write a short summary of your current level, relevant strengths and the work you want to contribute to. Replace generic claims with specific experience.
  3. Work experience: show recent roles first, with employer names and dates. Use concise points for responsibilities, projects and outcomes you can explain in an interview.
  4. Education and training: list relevant qualifications, institutions and dates. Describe an ongoing qualification accurately rather than treating it as completed.
  5. Skills and certifications: include practical skills you can demonstrate. Name a professional registration or certification only if you hold it and it is relevant.
  6. Referees: follow the advert. Where referees are requested, get their permission before sharing their contact details.

CVs for fresh graduates, internships and attachments

If you have limited work experience, place relevant education, projects and practical training near the top. Explain the task, tools and result of a project or volunteering activity. For an industrial attachment, state your course, institution and availability where relevant. You do not need to invent employment history to show your potential.

Tailor the CV to the vacancy

Use the advert to choose which real achievements to emphasise. For example, an accounts applicant might describe a reconciliation task, the records used and an accurate result they achieved. A customer service applicant might explain the enquiries handled and how issues were resolved. Include numbers only when you can support them.

Word or PDF?

Follow the employer's requested file type. Word is useful when you need to keep editing; PDF can help preserve the layout you checked. Review the exported file for page breaks, spelling and readable contact details before sending it. Use a recognisable filename such as Alex-Kimani-CV.pdf.

Check the application instructions

Some vacancies request a cover letter, job reference, certificates or a particular email subject. Send only the requested documents through the stated channel. Avoid adding sensitive identification, financial details or unrelated personal information to a general CV. Keep a copy of the version used for each application.

CV builder questions

Is a CV different from a resume?

For a job application, both usually describe your qualifications, experience and skills. In Kenya, adverts commonly ask for a CV. Follow the employer's requested content and length, especially for academic or research roles.

Can I make a CV without work experience?

Yes. Include education, attachments, projects, volunteering and skills relevant to the role. Describe what you actually did and learned. Our CV format guide above shows how to organise these sections.

Will my CV work with an applicant tracking system?

Recruitment systems vary. Use clear headings, readable text and truthful keywords from the job advert. Choose a simple layout when a portal requests it, and check the uploaded file. No template guarantees a screening result.

Are the downloads free?

Word and PDF exports are paid. Preview the layout and check the price of your chosen template before paying. A purchase unlocks that document in its selected template, with continued editing of that document. It is not a subscription or an unlock of every template.

Can I use M-Pesa?

Yes, when M-Pesa is enabled at checkout. Use the payment options shown for your order. Downloads unlock after payment is confirmed. Contact support with your order reference if you need help.
